The Minutes from the 14 Dec. 2005 EXCOM teleconference meeting were approved by E-Mail vote. 2. Old Business: A. Ken Vollmar Status on May 06 Banquet speaker? Ted Atchinson sent e-mail indicating that Don Wolf may be able to get Gary Burrell, who is one of Garmans founders as a speaker. Fred Granville volunteers to look into getting a speaker. Action: TBD Action date: TBD 3. New Business: A. Feb. section meeting will be Ted Atchinson, speaking on computers in the healthcare industry. Action: Alan Richardson and/or Mark Lamendola to work with Ted to put together a write-up to post on the website. Action date: 13 Jan. Kirk volunteered to receive the Feb. dinner meeting reservations. Alan has moved to Washington, DC. Ken Vollmar will get with Ted to get the information for the meeting announcement. B. Computer Society needs 2006 officers. Dale Rummer has been unsuccessful in recruitment of new officers. What steps to take? Action: TBD Action date: TBD The Computer society is in danger of disintegration without volunteers. Bill pointed out the subsection does not have to be based in KC. Bill suggested Ken look to see if he can find interested persons from SW.MO. Past due notification of Computer Societys February meeting prompted item F below. C. Reminder: KC Section Officer Training is rescheduled for 28 Jan 06. Bill Ritter will conduct the training over lunch (11 AM-3 PM). Goal: at least one representative from every organization. Kirk requested and received clarification that if the subsection chair is also a section officer then another officer of the subsection is invited to attend. D. 2006 KC section strategic plan. Action: TBD Action date: TBD Related: Each organizational unit (section, subsection, society, affinity group, and student chapter) is challenged to gaze inward and examine itself with respect to such aspects as leadership, program, benefit to members, reporting, finances, interaction with public, etc. Recognize good practices and areas for improvement. Action: Each organizational chair send one goal to Ken.Vollmar@ieee.org (no pressure!) Action date: Feb. EXCOM mtg. Along a similar note; Ken needs the 2006 budget from each Chapter, Affinity Group, Subsection, and Student Branch prior to releasing money from the Section to them. E. The next Section EXCOM Teleconference Meeting will be on 7 Feb 2006. The time of the EXCOM Teleconference Meeting will be 12 noon through 1 PM. F. Discussion was started into the notification period required for meetings, conferences, etc. One concern is that dinner meeting speakers are not set up far enough in advance which puts time constraints on the info posted to the web, inclusion in e-news, and opportunities to fill a vacant date by other subsections. Further discussion needed. G. Bill Ritter pointed out the 2005 books need to be closed by Jan. 29. He recommended Imran contact Randy Smischny, past Treasurer, as a mentor in how to prepare the report. The Communication Society is not part of Concentrated Banking; hence their numbers need to be added in. Imran will need signatures from the incoming and outgoing Chairs and Treasurers. H Discussion was held concerning conflicts among technical meetings in the region. Some officers received emails concerning the conflicts. It appears David Kasper is our new JEC Rep. David is tasked with updating the JEC with our meeting dates. I. Dialogue was started concerning IEEE On-Line Community as a means to communicate among officers, and to the members. Will it serve EXCOM to use this tool? Additional information is needed. J. There is a PACE conference March 3-5 (last day to register Jan 30) and the R5 Technical Conference in April; Ken V is a presenter at the April event. Should the Section send anyone? Is there anyone planning to attend? K. Discussion was held concerning funding awards for the Greater KC Science Fair sponsored by the Science Pioneers. Bob Minor described the event and requirements for participation. The fair is held March 29 through April 2 at Union Station and we need three members to volunteer to be judges. The application is due by Feb. 17. Bob suggested we offer a 1st place prize $75 and a 2nd place prize $25 in each of the three age groups, a $100 donation to the Science Pioneers, and certificates for the prize winners for a total cost slightly over $400. Ritter moved, Duncan seconded and voice vote approved the motion. Duncan mentioned that the PES was looking into this item and has a few members possibly ready to be judges. Discussion turned to other similar opportunities in the area. If a member is aware of such and wants to pursue support by the section they should propose it to the officers. Kirk J.
