We're looking for short technical articles for this Website. To get your place in
IEEE-KC's part of cyberspace, send your text to writer@ieee.org
as a plain Word document devoid of fancy formatting. All topics
pertinent to our industry are permissible, but no blatant ads will go into this library of
articles. The best kinds of articles for
an Internet format are the "Ten Tips on...." articles. Here are some guidelines that apply to preparing text for
just about any publication or Web site:
Do...
|
Don't...
|
- Italicize, underline, or bold
sparingly.
- Use a single simple font (such as
Arial) throughout.
- Place images in separate files, rather
than embed them in Word.
- Place tables in Excel, not in Word.
- Use the active voice, rather than the
passive voice.
- Keep the needs of the reader in
mind--make the information useful.
- Use a natural style--you are writing
to real people!
- Make sure you have the rights to the
material being submitted--photos "found on the Internet"
are not free to re-use without express written consent from their
owner!
|
- Indent paragraphs (just
pretend there is no tab key on your keyboard).
- Format tables or text with the
space bar
- Double space.
- Use trade names as regular
nouns or verbs. Its physically impossible to Xerox anything but,
you can photocopy something. The Xerox legal department explains this frequently.
The same goes for Megger; you can perform an insulation resistance test
- Use useless words or bulky phrases.
Instead of "In order to," say " To."
- Use flowery phrases.
|
Specific for IEEE-KC
- 500 to 1000 words is a good length.
- Do use manufacturer names, brand
names, or trade names--if they are important to the article or if they
give credit to the source, but not just to make a promo piece.
- You will get a byline with whatever contact information you want: your
hyperlinks, company name, and phone number are all appropriate information.
We do not like banners.
- The Kansas City Section retains the rights to re-use the material in other
media, or to delete the material from the site at any time.
- Allow the Webmaster, who is just a volunteer, some time
to post your article. Please note, the Webmaster doesn't have time for
extensive editing or reformatting--follow the guidelines and the process is
easy for everyone involved.
Contact the Webmaster (Mark Lamendola) at writer @ ieee.org. If you would like to be the Webmaster, I am looking for someone to replace me. Please contact me if you're interested.
