Future City Competition 2009-2010
Mentors needed!

As an Engineer Mentor in the National Engineers Week Future City Competition, you will give 7th and 8th grade students an opportunity to learn about engineering.

Students who participate in the competition will create a city simulation in SimCity 4 Deluxe, build a scale model of a portion of the city, write an abstract about the city and an essay on sustainability, and recite an oral presentation to describe the merits of their creation.

Your role as a mentor would be to give the students information on how engineers help design, build, and improve cities. As an Engineer Mentor, you will work with one teacher and three students from now through January of 2010. You will assist them with the design of their city, visiting the school once about every two weeks.

Schools currently in need of a mentor:

Kansas:

  • Lansing Middle School, 509 W. Ida, Lansing, KS 66043
  • Chisholm Middle School, 832 Trinity Ct., Newton, KS 67114

Missouri:

  • Raytown Middle School, 4900 Pittman Road, Kansas City, MO 64133
  • Raytown Central Middle School, 10601 E. 59th St., Raytown, MO 64133

Thought for the Day
If you expect things to go badly, they very likely will.

Send Us Your News

If you have information of interest to IEEE Kansas City Section members, please send that to the Publications Officer (writer @ ieee.org). Here are some examples of what we're looking for:

News pertaining to individual IEEE members of all grades, including students:

  • Awards, promotions, appointments, honors. Notable achievements.
  • "Looking for work"--send a paragraph explaining what you do and how to reach you.
  • Obituaries.

News to benefit other members

  • Technical courses, programs, seminars, lectures, lunch and learns, and tours open to members of the Section, a Society Chapter, or an Affinity Group Chapter.
  • Technical resources. A technical book or Website you found particularly useful.
  • Job openings.
  • Mentoring opportunities.
  • Updates on such groups as FIRST.

There is no "deadline." Just send information as you get it, and the Publications Officer will add it to the next eNL (if the item is appropriate and if space permits--and space nearly always permits).
