A Discussion of Geomagnetic Induced Currents (GICs) – What are they? What is their origin? How to mitigate their effects on the electric transmission system as Cycle 24 approaches.

This presentation will discuss the process of Coronal Mass Ejections as the source of Geomagnetic Induced Currents and their effects on numerous electric systems and components.

Further, we will explore the threat assessment efforts to provide a broad perspective on the topic. Specific methods of mitigation will be addressed.

Space Weather and the resulting geomagnetic storms are associated with ejection of charged particles from the Sun. Upon colliding with the Earth’s magnetosphere significant disturbances in this normally quiescent field produce disturbances at the Earth's surface. These disturbances have caused catastrophic impacts to technology systems in the past (e.g., the power blackout in Quebec in March 1989 for one).

More importantly, as detailed examinations have been undertaken concerning the interaction of geomagnetic storm environments with power grids and similar infrastructures, the realization has developed that these infrastructures are becoming more vulnerable to disruption from electromagnetic interactions for a wide variety of reasons. This trend suggests that even more severe impacts can occur in the future for reoccurrences of large storms
