AESS KC Chapter 2009 May Meeting

Tuesday, May 26, 2009

Time: Time has changed! New time is 4PM to 5 PM.

No meal will be served.

Location: Room RC 25 of the Regents Center building at the KU Edwards campus (12600 Quivira Rd, Overland Park, KS 66213).

Program: The Next Generation of Efficient Automobiles

Synopsis:
Electronic control of automobiles has already achieved significant gains with respect to engine power and emissions control. The next generation of vehicles will have a greater reliance on electronics as theoretical limits of efficiency are targeted as well as zero emissions. In this talk, a brief historical perspective is presented to demonstrate how this control has played a vital role in extending the capabilities of the automobile. The presenter will then look forward to show how its responsibility will continue to increase in the future.

Bio:
Dr. Chris Depcik's main area of specialty is the modeling of catalytic aftertreatment devices in the exhaust stream allowing engines to meet current and future emission regulations. Novel computer algorithms allow for varying levels of model complexity while including accompanying simplifications to increase the numerical speed of the governing equations.

He is leading the Learned Hall automotive test cell effort in order to provide data for his models and colleagues in other departments. This lab will study alternative fuels and advanced combustion regimes with a goal of increased efficiency and low emissions. This is being accomplished as part of a university wide Feedstock to Tailpipe initiative that is targeting a sustainable approach to liquid biofuel development. An underlying strength is his enthusiasm for teaching spending many years as a mentor instructing students inside and outside the classroom. He has already begun adding courses in alternative energy utilization in order to educate KU engineers in areas that are part of the government's strategic approach to energy security.
