December Meeting

Thursday, December 11, 2008
Sponsored by the Consultants Network, Kansas City Chapter
Co-hosted by the IEEE Life Member Group, Kansas City Chapter

Menu: (Note your choice when you register.)

  • Pan Fried Walleye. Lightly breaded and sautéed with Japanese Panko breadcrumbs, served with roasted red potatoes, and mixed vegetables.
  • Vegetarian Option: Portabella mushroom stroganoff.
  • Gluten-free meal: Broiled walleye with a tomato pesto butter and served with roasted red potatoes and mixed vegetables.

Program:

  • Has your global positioning system receiver ever been desensitized by a nearby digital circuit?

  • Has your microvolt level thermocouple signal ever been lost in noise generated by a variable frequency drive?

  • Has your computing device ever failed emissions testing for Federal Communications Commission certification? Then did you agonize with curing the cause?

  • Have the low level analog signals on your circuit board ever been contaminated by strong analog signals or by digital signals such as switching power supply noise or data bursts?

Whether you have experienced one of the described problems or another interference problem just as difficult, you will gain invaluable insight to reducing these problems – or better yet, avoiding them altogether – by coming to the December IEEE meeting to see and hear The Secret to Reducing Electrical Interference by Professor Emeritus Dr. Tom Van Doren, whose bio is here.

Presentation Title: The Secret to Reducing Electrical Interference.

Dr. Van Doren will discuss the correct answers to these questions:

  1. What path does current take?
  2. Does current go to ground?
  3. Does a straight wire have inductance?
  4. Is ground the current return path?
  5. What generates a magnetic field?

If you can correctly answer these five questions, then you can solve most electrical interference problems at frequencies of kHz, MHz, and GHz. Dr. Van Doren's presentation will include some surprising, profound demonstrations and practical examples.
