Program: The topic is Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles (PHEVs). The presenter is Bob DeVault, Strategic Planning, Energy and Transportation Science Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles (PHEVs) have gained interest over the past decade for several reasons, including their potential for substituting electricity for gasoline (reduced use of imported petroleum), very high fuel economy, convenient low-cost recharging capabilities, potential environmental benefits and, contributing to the goal of a 20% reduction in gasoline use in ten years.

PHEVs have also been suggested as an enabling technology to improve the reliability and efficiency of the electric power grid. However, PHEVs will likely cost significantly more to purchase than conventional or other hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), in large part because of the cost of batteries. Despite the potential long-term savings to consumers and value to stakeholders, the initial cost of PHEVs presents a major market barrier to their widespread commercialization.

An “Electrical Engineering” overview will be given about the various different PHEV technology options, potential benefits, and challenges in developing and commercializing vehicles that Plug-In to the electric grid.
