TopicPower and Politics: The confluence of business, politics, and technology in the electric utility industry.

Today, the electric power industry is under extreme stress. We have seen our industry follow the airline and telecommunications into the maelstrom of deregulation. As tough as deregulation has been in the industries that went before, at least these industries saw lower prices.

In the power industry we've experienced higher prices, major staff reductions, uneven re-regulation and industry consolidation. We've seen major blackouts that have rocked the utility business and
routinely makes front page news. What gives? Is the electric power industry that much different from other deregulated industries?

Rick Bush, Editor-in-Chief of Transmission & Distribution World, worked as a research engineer at Georgia Power for 22 years. Rick will share his perspectives on an industry in transition and share the impact of a decade of restructuring on the engineers who design, build, operate and maintain North America's power network. Rick has been very active in the IEEE, even promoting Engineering on television.
