Program:

  1. Elections of 2004 Section Officers (Chair, VC, Treasurer, Secretary), and three Society Chairs (PES, Computer, ComSoc).
  2. Scott Feuerborn and Bill Strongman, of Burns & McDonnell, will talk about the cascading blackout events that occurred on August 14, 2003 in the Northeastern US and Canada. They will provide an overview of the timing and sequence of events, and explore possible causes of the blackout--based on data released to-date. 

About the speakers:

Scott A. Feuerborn is the Manager for Burns & McDonnell's Transmission Planning Department. Mr. Feuerborn obtained his BS in Electrical Engineering from Kansas State University and his MBA from the University of Kansas. Mr. Feuerborn serves as project manager and senior project consultant on various transmission system planning studies. During his more than 12 years at Burns & McDonnell, he has gained a broad base of experience in utility system planning and management issues through performing numerous transmission and resource planning studies.

William (Bill) E. Strongman, P.E. received his BSc in Electrical Engineering and an MBA both from the University of Alberta, Canada. Before joining Burns & McDonnell, Mr. Strongman served in a variety of engineering positions with Canadian investor owned utilities. He is thoroughly familiar with utility systems from generation to local distribution and has a total of 27 years of experience in the utility industry. Since joining Burns & McDonnell in 2001, Mr. Strongman has managed and performed a wide variety of management consulting engagements and analytical studies ranging from power supply planning and transmission interconnection studies to review of operation and maintenance activities.
