Bullet Train Commemoration

The Bullet Train Milestone is a Commemorative Coaster

The technological innovation Tokaido Shinkansen (Bullet Train), an IEEE Milestone sponsored by the IEEE Tokyo Section of Region 10 and an American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Landmark, is being commemorated as a limited edition coaster.

The Bullet Train, which began service in 1964, is considered the world’s first high speed train.  The Bullet Train set a world record operating at speeds up to 210km/hr when it first began service in 1964. This historic engineering achievement, designed with the world’s most advanced electrical and technological train technologies, pioneered high speed railway transportation around the world. What started as a 500km route between Tokyo and Osaka has since expanded to a 2,459km network linking most major cities on Honshû and Kyushû.

To celebrate this important milestone, individuals who donate US$100+ to the IEEE Life Members Fund (LMF) from October 2009 to September 2010 will receive the limited edition pewter coaster depicting Tokaido Shinkansen.  The Bullet Train coaster is the third in a series of six limited edition pewter coasters commemorating various historic IEEE Engineering Milestones.  One coaster will be given per donor, per year.

The LMF provides grants to new and ongoing projects that are beneficial to potential engineers and engineering students.  Your gift will both preserve the memory of the Tokaido Shinkansen engineering achievement, and support future technological innovations. To receive your limited edition Bullet Train IEEE Milestone coaster, make a donation of US$100 or more to the IEEE Foundation/LMF today at >www.ieee.org/donate.

IEEE Life Members Fund supports educational and professional projects that are of interest to IEEE Life Members, that reflect the breadth and range of the engineering field, and that make a significant, positive, global impact on the profession. To learn more visit http://www.ieee.org/lmc.

Graduate Engineering Programs: Information Technology & Computer Science
The KU information technology and computer science graduate programs will provide the ultimate qualification for IT and computing professionals who would like to accumulate new competencies, deepen their understanding and advance their careers.

Offered through the KU Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) department, the EECS courses at the Edwards Campus in Overland Park, KS are specifically designed for the software, computing, and IT professionals in the Kansas City metropolitan area to address their education and training needs while accommodating their scheduling constraints.

Learn more by attending an upcoming information session or visit the EECS department Web site.

IEEE Elections
http://www.ieee.org/web/aboutus/corporate/election/index.html. You'll find candidate bios, statements, and more. Plus, you can vote from there. This is a useful and convenient resource for participating in this election.

Ballots are due by noon CST on October 1, 2009.

Thought for the Day
Can you name something

you did this month that would be great to bring up during a performance review? If so, don't wait until the review to bring it up. If not, you still have the rest of the month....

Send Us Your News

If you have information of interest to IEEE Kansas City Section members, please send that to the Publications Officer (writer @ ieee.org). Here are some examples of what we're looking for:

News pertaining to individual IEEE members of all grades, including students:

  • Awards, promotions, appointments, honors.
  • Notable achievements.
  • "Looking for work"--send a paragraph explaining what you do and how to reach you.
  • Obituaries.

News to benefit other members

  • Technical courses, programs, seminars, lectures, lunch and learns, and tours open to members of the Section, a Society Chapter, or an Affinity Group Chapter.
  • Technical resources. A technical book or Website you found particularly useful.
  • Job openings.
  • Mentoring opportunities.
  • Updates on such groups as FIRST.

There is no "deadline." Just send information as you get it, and the Publications Officer will add it to the next eNL (if the item is appropriate and if space permits--and space nearly always permits).

Sub/Unsub

You may unsubscribe to the IEEE-KC eNL mailing list at
