Program: The Life of James Clerk Maxwell

Speaker: Dr. James C. Rautio, IEEE Fellow and Distinguished Microwave Lecturer

Program Overview: James Clerk Maxwell stands shoulder to shoulder with Newton and Einstein, yet even those of us who have spent decades working with Maxwell's equations are almost totally unfamiliar with his life and times. This presentation, from the viewpoint of a microwave engineer, draws on many sources in providing an understanding of James Maxwell himself.

What was Maxwell like as an infant? What was the tragedy at eight years old that profoundly influenced his life? What unique means of transportation did young Maxwell use to escape a cruel tutor? What memorable event occurred on his first day of school? When did he publish his first papers, and what were they about?

What did Maxwell have to do with the rings of Saturn? Why did he lose his job as a professor? Why did he have a hard time getting another job? What was his wife like? What is Maxwell's legacy to us? The answers to these questions provide insight into Maxwell the person and add an extra dimension to those four simple equations we have studied ever since.

During his Distinguished Microwave Lecturer term, which runs from January 1, 2005 through
December 31, 2007, Dr. Rautio will present six to seven Maxwell lectures per year at MTT-S chapters, IEEE student chapters, and other IEEE society chapters. We are honored to have him in Kansas City.

Don't miss this unique opportunity to learn more about James Clerk Maxwell from a world-recognized authority.

3. September 15 Dinner Meeting

Thursday, 15 Sept, 2005. Contact Michael.A.Talley @mail.sprint.com for program information.

4. Role of an Officer

What is a PACE Officer? The acronym PACE stands for Professional Advancement, Continuing Education. PACE has many components to it, and is a part of IEEE-USA.

Positions in PACE typically provide fast-track leadership experience, as well as connections with business and political leaders. In the case of the Student Activity Chair and the Student Professional Awareness Activities Coordinator, the connections are primarily into academia.

PACE activities tend to be very focused, and driven toward the accomplishment of a given project. So if you are trying to enhance your resume with project management experience, PACE provides the means to do that. The experience is especially valuable, because you will have demonstrated the ability to motive volunteers, work with people, and get a project completed. All of that looks very good on paper, and it's great to talk about in a job interview.

PACE is a separate organization that runs in parallel with the Section structure. PACE has its own Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer. But the PACE Chair reports to the Section Chair as well as to the applicable Region PACE Chair. For the Kansas City Section, that is the Region 5 North Area PACE Chair.

You can find out more about PACE by visiting http://www.ieeeusa.org/volunteers/pace/. Find out more about IEEE-KC PACE by visiting http://www.ieee-kc.org/pace.

I'm going to try to make this a regular column in this eNL--just short pieces on IEEE officership. Mostly, I'll address individual officer roles so you can know more about them and the opportunities they provide. -- Mark Lamendola, eNL Editor

5. Management Certification

One way to expand your career opportunities is to gain certification as a manager. The Institute of Certified Professional Managers provides training and certification designed to raise raise competency and professionalism in managers.

The program will polish your skills in such areas as communication, planning, organization, and leadership. You'll gain knowledge in business law, managing diversity, managing globally, project management, and operations management--just to name a few.

It's not an MBA or and "MBA-light." The investment of time and money is also significantly less than that of an MBA. For more information, see: http://cob.jmu.edu/icpm/.

ICPM is under the purvey of James Madison University, in Virginia. In its current issue, U.S. News & World Report rated JMU #2 among universities in the south offering Master's Programs.

Full disclosure note: Your eNL editor is an ICPM Regent.

6. Metropolitan ICC

The Metropolitan KC Chapter ICC is sponsoring the presentation of educational seminars during two training sessions.
  • October 3-7, 2005: IBC Architectural Applications, Solving Means of Egress, Special Uses & Mixed Occupancies, Hazardous Materials, Fire Protection Systems.
  • November 7-10, 2005: Performing Commercial Bldg. Inspections, Performing Residential Inspections.

Participants will earn continuing education credit. For more information contact Bill Watson by phone, 816-513-1574 or see Website: http://www.buildasitefactory.com/index.php?id=332
