Program: The Life of James Clerk Maxwell

Speaker: Dr. James C. Rautio, IEEE Fellow and Distinguished Microwave Lecturer

Program Overview: James Clerk Maxwell stands shoulder to shoulder with Newton and Einstein, yet even those of us who have spent decades working with Maxwell's equations are almost totally unfamiliar with his life and times. This presentation, from the viewpoint of a microwave engineer, draws on many sources in providing an understanding of James Maxwell himself.

What was Maxwell like as an infant? What was the tragedy at eight years old that profoundly influenced his life? What unique means of transportation did young Maxwell use to escape a cruel tutor? What memorable event occurred on his first day of school? When did he publish his first papers, and what were they about?

What did Maxwell have to do with the rings of Saturn? Why did he lose his job as a professor? Why did he have a hard time getting another job? What was his wife like? What is Maxwell's legacy to us? The answers to these questions provide insight into Maxwell the person and add an extra dimension to those four simple equations we have studied ever since.

During his Distinguished Microwave Lecturer term, which runs from January 1, 2005 through
December 31, 2007, Dr. Rautio will present six to seven Maxwell lectures per year at MTT-S chapters, IEEE student chapters, and other IEEE society chapters. We are honored to have him in Kansas City.

Don't miss this unique opportunity to learn more about James Clerk Maxwell from a world-recognized authority.

3. AUG KCNN Meeting Review

The IEEE-KC Consultant's Network has grown in part because we get together monthly for lunch and networking on the first Thursday at 11:30 am.

Unless we have a speaker scheduled, we meet at Allies in the Overland Park Marriot. No reservations are required. The typical attendance at these lunches is 6 to 8 persons which is over 50% of our official membership. A comparable number of our group attend the monthly IEEE dinners on a regular basis. We schedule speakers for several of the lunches during the year and take reservations for these events. The attendance at these lunches with a speaker ranges from 15 to 20, depending upon the topic.

We urge other societies and affinity groups of the Kansas City Section to try scheduling similar lunches for networking and increasing interest in the Kansas City IEEE Section.

4. September 15 Dinner Meeting

Thursday, 15 Sept, 2005. Details will be on the Website and in an upcoming eNL.

5. Management Certification

One way to expand your career opportunities is to gain certification as a manager. The Institute of Certified Professional Managers provides training and certification designed to raise raise competency and professionalism in managers. The program will polish your skills in such areas as communication, planning, organization, and leadership. You'll gain knowledge in business law, managing diversity, managing globally, project management, and operations management--just to name a few.

It's not an MBA or and "MBA-light." The investment of time and money is also significantly less than that of an MBA. For more information, see: http://cob.jmu.edu/icpm/.

Full disclosure note: Your eNL editor is a Regent on the ICPM's Board.

6. UMKC Wins Again

It is my distinct pleasure to report that the UMKC IEEE Student Chapter took fourth place in the International IEEE Website Design competition. We took first place in the Region 5 competition which allowed us to proceed to the International competition.

Congratulations to Vishal Mody in particular for all of his hard work on the Website. www.umkc.edu/studo/ieee

8. Thought for the Day

Problems are not like wine--rather than get better with age, they get worse as time goes on.
