Engineers fall into roughly three categories:
If you're a seasoned engineer, think back to the early days of your career. You were probably in awe of coworkers who were close to or beyond your parents' generation. They were the "go to folks," the experts, and your mentors. But over the course of your career, the mantle has been steadily passing on to you. With one hand, you need to pat yourself on the back for being where you are today. You need to extend the other hand to the generations behind you. If you are just starting out, you can put your career on steroids by reaching out to the generations ahead of you. Ask for their advice, and listen carefully to what they say. You may be up on the latest technology, but those who have gone where you are going can offer you wisdom and insight. Most would be delighted to see you not repeat the mistakes they have made, but instead to build on what they have done. If you are retired, you are one of the giants upon whose shoulders the rest of us stand. But there is always more you can share, more you can say, more you can teach. Those who are half a generation or more behind you and once held you in awe--still have ample reason to do so. When you come to our various events or take a leadership role as an officer, you do far more good than you may realize. |
Wishing you the best,
Mark Lamendola
