Section Elections
This year, the Section didn't meet its nomination deadline for the 2012 Section elected officers. Consequently, officers were nominated from the floor at the IEEE Computer Society meeting in October.

This year, we held the elections electronically for the first time. In previous years, you had to actually attend a dinner meeting (typically the December one) to vote. The new process permits participation by all Section members.

Results are:

  • Chair: Jorge Marquez
  • Vice Chair: Plamen Doynov
  • Treasurer: Chris Zugelder
  • Secretary: Sara Stephens

These four people, along with the Chairs of the Societies with chapters in Kansas City, make up the executive committee (ExCom). The ExCom holds regular meetings and votes on actions. ExCom meeting minutes are, by Roberts Rules of Order, a record of motions made and votes taken. You will find the Minutes on the Section Website.

There are officers other than those on the ExCom, too. For example, each Society elects its own Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer, and Secretary. Other officers do things like produce this eNL, run affiliate groups, and liaison with other engineering organizations. Officers who are not elected are appointed.

KC Section and Chapter Meetings
We no longer register via e-mail. Visit our Meetings page to see the current method.

Big thanks to Jorge Marquez, Dave Kasper, and Chris Zugelder for getting this set up and running properly.

Website Changes
IEEE has provided some tools that allow us to be more database-driven in how we get content onto the Website. This means much less e-mailing and HTML work. And that should translate into some benefits for the members of the Kansas City Section. We don't know exactly how yet, but you'll see as things progress.

Our first foray into this was our meeting information; you may have noticed the changes on the Meetings page. We implemented that by inserting code into our existing page, to draw content from the database. Our next step is going to be reversing that relationship, wherein the database-driven area will be the main area. This is much easier and less prone to breakage than doing extensive coding to import things.

Soon, you'll notice two domains if you click around. We're going to try to do as much as possible in the IEEE domain that's data-driven, with our original domain being mostly archival.

Note from Section Webmaster: Big thanks to Jorge Marquez for getting so much of the legwork done. This will make my job easier in the long run, which also means it should be easier to pass the baton some day.

Washington Internships for Students of Engineering (WISE)

SUMMER 2012 PROGRAM Monday, 4 June - Friday, 3 August: WISE seeks applications from outstanding engineering students who display evidence of leadership skills and have a keen interest in public policy.

Minority students are encouraged to apply.

Applicants should select a sponsoring society(s), fill out an application form, write two (2) brief essays in response to questions, arrange for two (2)faculty references, and forward an official transcript. The deadline for Summer 2012 applications is December 31, 2011.

For more info and application forms, please visit: http://wise-intern.org/application/index.html

“…one of the best summers of my life. One which truly transformed my dreams and goals. ….when I left D.C. I really wanted to instill in my fellow engineers the appreciation of the interaction between public policy and engineering.” -- Marc Canellas, WISE 2011
